Book Donations to the General Collection

While the McDermott Library appreciates the donation of materials that strengthen the collection and support the Academy's academic programs, due to decreased storage space, reduced staffing, and increased electronic book access, the McDermott Library does not accept gift-in-kind donations to the General Collection.

Book Donations to the Clark Special Collection Branch

The Clark Special Collections branch, a working archive, continues to accept and permanently preserve irreplaceable, unpublished, primary-source materials (i.e. diaries, personal papers, letters, manuscripts, identified photographs) for use by cadets, military, and civilian researchers. Through the work of The Friends of the Academy Library, dedicated volunteers, and many others who generously give their materials, this repository keeps the Air Force legacy alive among cadets, faculty, visiting scholars and writers of airpower history.

For more information, please see the below attached Gifts & Donation Policy Memorandum.  Questions about the General Collection, contact our office via email or at (719) 333-2590.  Questions about donations to the Clark Special Collections, please contact via email or at (719) 333-4674.

DF Department Book Donations or Disposal

It depends on what types of books and how they were obtained by your Department:

  1. Department Course Materials (usually bound blue books) must be kept according to the records management disposition rules.  Please contact the Base Records Manager at 333-2708 or BRM@us.af.mil if you have questions about Records Management.
  2. Books purchased with government funds are turned in to DLA-DS for possible re-sale at Fort Carson or can be donated to another government office.
  3. If the books are not considered course materials and were not purchased with government funds, then they can be donated (i.e., other libraries, schools, Goodwill, etc.), recycled, or thrown away.
